Filing for VA Disability Benefits

To be eligible for VA disability benefits, the applicant must:

  • Have a discharge other than a dishonorable discharge;
  • Have a current illness or injury that is service-related; and
  • Have sufficient evidence to prove their current illness or injury is connected to service.

If a veteran believes they are eligible for disability benefits, they should submit a completed copy of VA Form 21-526 to the nearest VA Regional Office.

There is no deadline for submitting the VA Form 21-526. However, with the current processing time, taking over six months, it is advisable to submit the application as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, if your claim is denied, the appeals process can take several additional years.
