Are You One Of 500,000 Being Abused?

The Centers for Disease Control reports that over 500,000 older adults are abused or neglected each year. This number is probably low because many victims are unable or afraid to report it. Also, professionals and family members may miss signs of abuse. A study published in the American Journal of Public Health found that one out of 10 older people experienced abuse—not including financial abuse, which is the most prevalent form of elder abuse. The annual loss from victims of elder financial exploitation was estimated to be nearly $3 billion in 2009. Elder abuse is a growing problem with devastating…

Hiring an End-of-Life Enforcer

The chilling dilemma of “the unbefriended elderly,” who don’t have family or close friends to make medical decisions on their behalf if they can’t speak for themselves, generated a bunch of ideas the last time we discussed it. One reader, Elizabeth from Los Angeles, commented that as an only child who had no children, she wished she could hire someone to take on this daunting but crucial responsibility. “I would much rather pay a professional, whom I get to know and who knows me, to make the decisions,” she wrote. “That way it is an objective decision-maker based on the…

Why You Need To Pre Plan Your Funeral

James Davis figures that his first mistake was asking permission. If a man promises his wife he will bury her in the front yard, then he should just do so. “They’re waiting on me to die,” said James Davis, whose lawn has a sign with a message for town officials about his wife. “I am not digging her up.” But ever since Mr. Davis granted his dying wife’s wish by laying her to rest just off his front porch, he and the City of Stevenson have been at odds. From City Hall to the courts, the government of this little…

Three California Bills Would Strengthen Elder Abuse Prevention Law

San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis and two local state senators urged Gov. Jerry Brown to sign three bills aimed at helping to prevent elder abuse, including financial elder abuse. “The changes to the law included in these bills will make a real difference as our Elder Abuse Unit works to hold defendants accountable when they abuse senior citizens in our community,” Dumanis said. She was joined by Sens. Mark Wyland (R-Carlsbad) and Joel Anderson (R-San Diego), in encouraging the governor to sign the legislation. SB 543, which is sponsored by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, would…
